If you want to see millions of new green jobs created to address climate change and prevent mass species extinction, then
The Great Pivot is for you.

Perhaps you are an aspiring entrepreneur who wants to start a green business or non-profit. Maybe you just want to find a green job. Or you’re a policymaker trying to figure out what policies and programs would support green job creation.

We need millions of new jobs to decarbonize our energy and transportation systems, build a circular economy, reduce food waste, and restore nature. The Great Pivot gives dozens of examples of projects that created meaningful jobs retrofitting, building, switching, reclaiming, and restoring.

Now is the time to expand green job creation in the private, non-profit, and public sector. Doing so is one of the most powerful ways to speed up restoration of the Earth and the health of those living on it.

“We’ve seen no shortage of Green New Deal plans calling for new federal spending on green projects to reduce carbon emissions, restore ecological systems, and reorganize our society to prevent climate change. What would it take to implement needed reforms and environmental projects in our own communities, starting today? Change management expert Justine Burt presents an idea book for policy makers and professionals."

"The Great Pivot includes a set of 30 discrete projects and policies that have been demonstrated to improve energy efficiency, restore ecosystems, and deliver more meaningful work. And, most importantly, she discusses where such ideas must take root and where pragmatic activists must focus--not just in Congress or in the White House, but in industry boardrooms, state legislatures and commissions, and city halls. Burt brings refreshing realism and on-the-ground experience to our climate policy debates.”

Why Meaningful Work is More Important Than Ever

Workforce trends of the past few decades have left American workers anxious. Middle class jobs have been outsourced to other countries. Instead of stable full-time work, many people piece together part-time gigs without benefits. In the near future, more and more tasks will be automated away, freeing people from dull and dangerous work. But what work do we need people doing?

Currently, 26.8 million Americans are officially unemployed or Not in the Labor Force (NILF). On top of this, every year 626,000 people are released from prison. If they can’t find full-time work, they can’t reintegrate into society. Many of these people want to work. If they could find meaningful work performing tasks useful to society, even better.
At the same time, the Earth’s atmosphere, waterways, and land have absorbed more pollution than they can handle. Wildlife habitat has been degraded and fractured in ways that compromise wildlife’s ability to survive. Important work restoring environmental health would not only potentially stabilize the climate and wildlife populations, but would also give meaningful work to millions of people.

Now is the time to invest abundant resources in building a sustainable future. Not only for nature’s sake, but because these investments will become income for people who will spend it in their local economies thus multiplying to become income for others.
